The Right Time to Get an MBA

A Master's of Business Administration degree has grown in popularity in recent years. Many people will pursue this degree for a variety of reasons - more money, a promotion, a career change, or just to achieve a dream of getting a master's degree. Whatever your reasons, if you want to get the most out of this degree, you should be aware that there is a right time to start.

You should only pursue an M.B.A. if you have several years of relevant work experience - at least 2-3 years or so - under your belt. If you are a recent college grad you should wait a few years before pursuing this degree. The course structure for an MBA is really designed for people with at least a few years of actual business experience. Many college graduates want to get an MBA right away so that they can just get it out of the way. If you find yourself in that situation you should be aware that employers will judge your experience over your degree. It probably won't help all that much in the first few years of your career. At one large NYC accounting firm, they offered only $1,000 a more a year to an M.B.A. graduate with no experience then a college graduate with the same experience.

To really get the most out of this degree, consider working for at least 3 years. The average age of an MBA student is now between 26-29. After a few years of working you'll get a better idea of what you want to actually get out of this degree. Do you want to network? Or do you want a promotion at your current job? Or do you need further training?  You’ll find that your motivations change greatly after a few years of working. Another great benefit of waiting a few years is that you might quality for tuition assistance from your employer. An M.B.A. degree  is extremely expensive, and you’ll need all the help you can get to cover the bill.

Greetings and salutations, I am your friendly neighborhood Content Director here at eLearners.com. (I am also mom to a seemingly tireless 4-year-old girl and owner to a cat that hates me. Oh well - can't win 'em all.)

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science from Rutgers College and am thisclose to completing my master's degree in instructional design from Western Illinois University later this year.
