My St. Petersburg College Experience

Steve's got it all - great wife, smart kids, successful career - except for one thing: a college degree. Now, at 44, he's going back to school online at St. Petersburg College to finish the associate's degree he abandoned 25 years ago.

Falling back into the same old trap

I'm behind in my statistics class. If you've been reading my blog at all, you know that this is a self-paced independent study class from the University of Florida, and you also probably know that my history says I'm not all that great at keeping myself on track in "open ended" course schedules. This became all too evident thanks to my experience with independent study classes at Louisiana State University. I thought that this time would be different, and I would be able to stay on track from beginning to end (particularly when you consider that this is the last class I'll need to complete my associate degree from St. Petersburg College).

No such luck.

I've successfully put this class off until just a couple of weeks until the class deadline. Fortunately for me, all I had to do was contact the university and pay a fee ($75.00) to extend my course deadline until April. Ok, so I'm temporarily off the hook, but I'm disturbed with my own continued inability to complete these self-paced classes in a timely manner.

So now I've got to put my nose to the grindstone and pick up this class where I left off. Yes, of course there have been some extenuating circumstances, but that's just another excuse. It's all on me, strictly on my own shoulders to make sure I get done what needs to get done. There's no doubt I can do it, but I have to hold myself accountable.

So I e-mailed my instructor and told him that I'd extended the class deadline and he was glad to know that I'm going to pick up my work again and get back on track. He was very nice and even asked if there's anything he can do to help me catch up. That was great. I don't think I'll be taking him up on that offer because it's nothing more than procrastination that's gotten me into trouble.

I think I'll go study some statistics...

I can really relate to what you are talking about.  I got my paralegal certification from Washington Online Learning Institute, otherwise known as WOLI, and in the beginning I just didn't feel I had the discipline to stick with the studies and get through in time for the next course.  So I explained this to my first instructor there, whose name was Professor Annie, and she was really really helpful.  She answered all my emails within a day of me posting them to her and helped me get back in the groove of learning.  By the time I had finished the legal research class using Westlaw, I was in teh groove as they say and just chugging along learning at an independent pace.  I used to study in the mornings with a routine. And I just stuck to it and the months rolled by.  Eventually I got a job at a big law firm on Wall Street and they graciously paid for my tuition as long as I maintained a B average and this was even more motivation for me to study and so I did!   Hope this helps.
