My Axia College Experience

My name is Arlyne (pronounced "r-lean"). I was born in East Los Angeles and went to high school in downtown L.A. I have had my share of different jobs, from party line operator, caregiver to a delivery driver for the local school district. I love helping people and making a difference.

My mother passed away the . . . in 2003, Dec 31, 2003. I did not like the way the hospital took care of her; they did not show compassion to families in the emergency room . . . I lost my mom and best friend.

I promised myself I would work in the healthcare area, and make sure that nurses pay attention and show compassion for the family members that are around them when life is passing. I am going to continue my education with UOP and so far plan on getting my Masters. I love online classes, they let me be a mom, work, and take care of my home.

The best thing about taking classes over the Internet

I was recently asked what was the best thing about taking classes over the Internet?

I personally love the fact that if my children or husband need me right away, I would be able to stop my school work and return to it where I had left off. Whether I step a way for a minute, or 7 hours, I can return to the exact spot I had stopped at.

I can also go at my pace in reading the material, and if I have to read it over again, I can. In a regular class, the teacher sometimes flies right though the material. At times, you may feel lost and even feel like you are falling behind in class. If after re-reading and you still feel lost, you can always e-mail or call your instructor and talk one on one about your situation. You can even go into your class chat room and ask your classmates for help, if you want.

There are so many different reasons why I love taking classes over the Internet that I can not pick just one. I can say that taking classes through the Internet is suitable for you if you have a job or children, and you still want the freedom of studying at your own pace. You learn how to manage your time to get your homework done, and you really learn self discipline. I was never too good in high school. I was an average student pulling "C's" and sometimes a sad "D". At this time in college, I am an "A" and "B" student.

I feel lost every time that Christmas break comes around and there is no homework. I still check in to class just to make sure there is nothing posted from the instructor.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

How long have you been doing online classes? Also do you have textbooks that you read from or do you read them online? If you read them online, is it easier to just read your materials online then reading a book?  I want to do online classes but I don't think I have time to do it. Right now time to do anything I would love to do seems impossible to find because I have 2 kids and 2 step kids. My daughter will be 3 in March and my son is 3 months old, plus my 2 step kids are ages 8 and 10 and I'm always busy taking care of them, doing house work, doing errands, I'm always on the go. I'm 23 years old and I don't have a degree. I would like to get a degree in the Healthcare field and set a good example to my kids. How do you do it?

Hi Toni,

I have been going to school online since April 2006. It has been great. You asked if textbooks that I read from have or do I read them online. You will get your reading material on-line and what I do is I print out the chapter the week before and I read it. I study it and I make sure I understand it. The chapter is usually 60-70 pages long. I rather print and read that way if I go somewhere and I need to wait I can read my material. I love online classes it is convenient for me at this time in my life. I have two children, 5 and 7 and they need to go to school and be picked up and all the other work that a Mom needs to do, that I am sure you are aware of. Do you ever have time for yourself? Online classes are not for everyone. You need to really want it, you totally need self discipline. I started in April 2006 and it was not until August 2006 where I had my schedule all worked out. In the first couple classes they go over Time Management, a class that you will use for a very long time. I am getting my AA in Healthcare Administration and have already registered with the UOP for my BS in Human Service/Management and that will take me into my Masters in Healthcare Administration-Gerontology. I am so excited about getting to that point in my life. I am glad that you have made a small move to get information on how to go to school, and take care of your house and children. It will all start to fall in place for you once you start. Kudos to you taking care of four children and thinking about returning to school.

Toni, I hope I have answered your question. Feel free to write back as writing is one of my favorite pass time and it also helps me become a better writer.:)
