My Axia College Experience

My name is Arlyne (pronounced "r-lean"). I was born in East Los Angeles and went to high school in downtown L.A. I have had my share of different jobs, from party line operator, caregiver to a delivery driver for the local school district. I love helping people and making a difference.

My mother passed away the . . . in 2003, Dec 31, 2003. I did not like the way the hospital took care of her; they did not show compassion to families in the emergency room . . . I lost my mom and best friend.

I promised myself I would work in the healthcare area, and make sure that nurses pay attention and show compassion for the family members that are around them when life is passing. I am going to continue my education with UOP and so far plan on getting my Masters. I love online classes, they let me be a mom, work, and take care of my home.

Online Study ... How do you know if it's right for you?

I was asked about how I know that studying online is right for you. I tell them it might not be right for everyone, but for me at this time in my life it is perfect.

I work part time, have two small children and go to school on line. My schedule is full. Attending Axia College of U.O.P. is perfect for me. They give you classes at the beginning to teach you how to mange your time. You have to make a chart and show how you manage time. Needless to say I am very eager to get my degree and keep my grades up and ended up with an “A” in that class. I use everything I had learned in that class to keep my self on target and make sure I get my homework done before the due date. I recommend studying online to anybody who is planning on going back to school and already has a full schedule.

Of course I m not going to lie and say it is easy, in the beginning I had a hard time understanding what do. If you read the class syllabus before class you will understand how easy it is, if you just follow directions.

Now I'm almost done with my Associate Degree, and I look back and think “That was an awesome ride to my AAHA”. I have recently registered with the University of Phoenix to get my BSHS/M degree and look forward into starting those classes and of course it is all online also.

I have learned so much and one valuable thing I take with me is self-discipline. The classes that I was given in the start of college have really helped me to be the student I am today—with a GPA of 3.8. Need I say more?

What’s really holding you up?

I have 5 children ans a full time job. My mother helps me watch all my kids. Is online school expensive? How long woull it take mee to get my first degree? Is it pay as you go? Where can  i buy the  books  to get a  head start on my degree?

Hi Erica,

Thank you for that comment. Five children are more than a handful; I should be asking you for advice. If going to school sounds likes what you want to do and it does, you can make it work. Your mother helps with the children. I have two children and do my schooling while they are at school and my Husband helps with them. Sundays are the big day for assignments and I have a final this Sunday, so, usually my husband will spend the day with the kids so I am able to get my homework done. You really need self discipline and really stick to a schedule. It took me almost four months to really have my schedule down perfect. Of course there are little problems that arise, such as kids, emergency phone calls, etc. but if you are doing a paper you could walk away and when you return it is still there waiting for you. That is the great part of online classes. In a conventional college if you walked out of class you just missed the whole lecture and now probably feel lost. As for the cost I cannot give you an exact amount I believe every degree is different and it depends on what you are going to school for. Otherwise I suggest you would need to call and speak to a financial counselor who will help you out and point you in the right direction into financing your education. I can give you a number if you like? You cannot purchase any books for online class as they come with your class and I believe they are revised every so often and the syllabus changes too. If you need any more advice feel free to write me. Hope I helped :)
