My Axia College Experience

My name is Arlyne (pronounced "r-lean"). I was born in East Los Angeles and went to high school in downtown L.A. I have had my share of different jobs, from party line operator, caregiver to a delivery driver for the local school district. I love helping people and making a difference.

My mother passed away the . . . in 2003, Dec 31, 2003. I did not like the way the hospital took care of her; they did not show compassion to families in the emergency room . . . I lost my mom and best friend.

I promised myself I would work in the healthcare area, and make sure that nurses pay attention and show compassion for the family members that are around them when life is passing. I am going to continue my education with UOP and so far plan on getting my Masters. I love online classes, they let me be a mom, work, and take care of my home.

My Favorite Online Class

My favorite class at Axia College of University of Phoenix I would have to say is Public Policy Development in Health & Human Services.

In this class we needed to pick a social problem in our community and research why it is a problem and how can we fix this social problem. As classmates chose situations such as homelessness, adoptions, foster care, elderly care, I chose a huge problem that is affecting not only my community, but some of my closest friends. My choice eas Foreclosure and Predator lending.

I have been researching this and have found that homeowners were given loans that they would not be able to pay back (and sure enough lose their homes). There are some agencies that can help you save your home. Statistics show that homeowners are either abandoning there homes or doing a "Deed in lieu" to get away from having to pay such high mortgages.

I had to go deeper, and found out what was considered a "high" mortgage, especially in my community. I asked a couple friends about their mortgages, and found out they are paying $3,690.00 a month for a four bedroom home (1900 square feet). There is no view of an ocean or lakes, just the house next door to you. My friend said they refinanced due to a family emergency, and was given higher interest rates for two years and now that the 2 years have ended, they are paying $4,300.00 a month now. Or should I say, they should be paying $4,300.00, but decided they were better off foreclosing and that renting was better a avenue to go to.

I could go on.

This class has been one of my best classes, and I have learned how to research more quickly and tell the difference between legitimate websites and fake sites. Reading all my classmates post on their subjects has opened up my eyes. I find myself researching other subjects such as elderly care regarding Alzheimer/dementia, foster care, and abused women.

These classes are very interesting, and you feel great knowing you have really learned something new.

One of the best classes I took was about fair housing. I learned about how UNFAIR it really is, and the history of housing discrimination in the United States. It really opened my eyes.

Hi Victoria,

In my Course, I chose the Social Problem of Foreclosures in my Community and after doing the research, I could not believe the statistic in my area regarding how many families are in jeporady of losing there home due to predator lending. It is amazing when you can research and really see the numbers and statistics on many different Social problems. After forclosure families usally end up in the next social problem...Homelessness and fostercare. In lake Elsinore there are many homeless adults living around the lake while the children are sent to foster care home. I am still researching about funding for families facing forclosures and how to help these families that bit off more then they can chew.

Unfair housing sound interesting also. Is Unfair housing a big problem in your area or is it the same everywhere?
