My Axia College Experience

My name is Arlyne (pronounced "r-lean"). I was born in East Los Angeles and went to high school in downtown L.A. I have had my share of different jobs, from party line operator, caregiver to a delivery driver for the local school district. I love helping people and making a difference.

My mother passed away the . . . in 2003, Dec 31, 2003. I did not like the way the hospital took care of her; they did not show compassion to families in the emergency room . . . I lost my mom and best friend.

I promised myself I would work in the healthcare area, and make sure that nurses pay attention and show compassion for the family members that are around them when life is passing. I am going to continue my education with UOP and so far plan on getting my Masters. I love online classes, they let me be a mom, work, and take care of my home.

Going back to school on-line

Hi Arlyne,
Your story is very inspiring. It makes me feel like I can accomplish more for myself. I work fulltime as a Registered Nurse and have 2 young children 4 and 7 year olds. How does it work out for you going to school and raising the kids? I would like to go back to school to get my Bachelors so I can become a Forensics Nurse but it seems very hard since I am also a Nurse Manager 5 days a week.

Beverly,

Sounds like you already manage your time with two children and a job as an R.N. Thank you very much for the compliment. What has me reaching for that degree is making a better life for my family.I enrolled in Axia April 2005. I will get my AA in March 2008. Time flew fast. I would totally reccomend distant learning espeacilly if you have children, a job and a house to take of.  The busy homework days are Sunday's so I make sure I can get my homework done. My husband helps out with watching the children on Sundays and especially on Final week. Classes are 9 weeks long and they do fly by quickly.

You get a lot of support from you academic counslor and make quite a few friends from all over the United States and beyond. Your instructor helps you when needed and after turning in your homework and recieving the instructors feedback makes you proud of your work. I have made friends all over and we even help eachother out with problems we do not understand. I enjoy being back in school, I never thought in a million years I could earn a degree and now I am going to continue and reach for a Masters. Forensic Nursing sound interesting.

What is your hold up now in pursuing that degree? Is it managing your time? Scared? Finances? You have already completed your R.N. so going back to school will be a breeze for you. What field in nursing are you in today? Do you know which school you would want to attend? Checking out schools is your first step and that is the hardest step. I love going to school and how it has wakened my brain. I  have an answer for a to all the questions I have asked you. Are you interested?

Arlyene,

I love reading your blogs. I read your story and you have a lot of  experiences. You are also a pretty woman with a lot of experience. I too worked in the fields in Bakersfield for over 5 years. I need to make a better lifee for my children and my mothr. Are on line classes hard? I am not good in english and in math. How long are each class? I was told about 6 months a piece. Is that true? Do you hhave a GPA? I do not think online class furnish students with Gpa's. Do u  need a certain computer or apple  macintosh computers ok?

Erica,

Field work is a hard job. And 5 years of hard labor is more than enough for a woman. I am glad you want to make a better life for your children and mother. On-line classes are actual college course. What makes it a bit easier is that you read your materials at your own pace. Usually you read your books a week in advance and you will have no problems. There is different area in Axia's website that will help you with Writing and Math. Classes are in 9 week blocks. So, you know in 9 weeks you will be done with two courses. They are accelerated courses and to get your degree a little sooner than if you were attending a conventional college. You do have a G.P.A. and mine is at a 3.8 right now. I am going to try to keep it there and not go any lower. Everytime you log on to school with Axia College your GPA automatically shows up on your home page, Kind of a reminder where you stand in your education. I was not a great high school student in fact I was average a solid “C” student, and here in college I am doing much better.  I work on a Dell computer. In fact when you sign up with Axia there is a Dell website you could go in and order a computer and receive a discount on your purchase. As for Macintosh I was told last year that they were try to make it compatible with the school and the reason why was because Mac’s did not have Word and Now Mac carries a Word program, so you most likely be able to use your Macintosh. I hope I answered your questions. I wish you the best and if I can help you out drop me a line.
