Today was great, shocking but great. I started work this morning at 8:30AM even though I actually got there around 7:00AM. Hey, there’s no sleep the night before starting a new job. I was given a brief introduction to some of the people I’ll be working around and occasionally with and then wham-o, right into the meetings, the flow charts, the projects that are going on and about 9,000,000 acronyms of teams, software, some things I can’t recognize, don’t know about or don’t want to know about. I don’t yet speak the language so there’s going to be a learning curve. Also I have been brought on primarily because of my knowledge in project management. That means ol’ Cajun here is going to definitely have to do some brushing up on the project management skills. I just borrowed around 6 books from my brother on project management of various types, additionally I’ll be working towards earning a CompTIA Project+ certification just to rehash my computer skills and learn how they integrate into project management.
Make no mistake, I have to hit the ground running, there just isn’t any time to sit back and congratulate myself because these people and these teams are on the move. We’re talking senior professionals who know what they’re doing and suddenly I’m in their midst expecting to be on top of my game. These are very impressive folks, doing very impressive stuff and honestly I’m a little bit intimidated, but I’m game. I’m about to do all of the things I listed above all while still completing my school work on time from WNMU. How? Scheduling and strict discipline my friends. Remember how important I told you scheduling becomes when taking an accelerated MBA? Where here’s a skill I had to utilize while earning my MBA that is about to be put towards real world use. Sometimes it’s not what you learn from the material but instead what you learn from the process itself that is the most valuable. Think about it.
