I can tell you with no hesitation whatsoever that this is one of the most satisfying blog posts I’ve ever written. I got the job! I will soon be a Project Analyst in the I.T. department of my current agency. I get a slight raise which is good but the real prize is the possibility for future growth in this position. This particular department in general has much higher compensation ceilings than the one I’m in now, plus I get to work in projects which I wanted, I’ll be home in the evenings, on weekends and holidays and lastly I get to start up and/or play in a band now that I’ll have more normal working hours. This is just a long way of saying my whole life is about to change.
So I know some of you are wondering if my
MBA had anything to do with it and after meeting with the recruiter today I can say unequivocally that YES it had a lot to do with it. He was very impressed that I earned my masters while working full time, the hiring manager seemed to be impressed with the documents I turned in which I learned how to do during the degree process itself (the education) plus I’m sure the MBA had a lot to do with it since a recruiter (a different one) also told me that this particular department places a lot of importance upon credentials and even more importance upon actual skills. In short I think my MBA was key and what I learned during my MBA process combined with real world experience sealed the deal. Of course you’ve got to give most (if not all) of the credit to God too, after all this was a door that was opened at just the right moment in time, with just the right skills needed to where I simply waltzed in the door and bam!!! Three business days later I’m hired, which is more than coincidence the way things all worked out. I almost didn’t even apply to the job, I’m so glad now that I did.
Truthfully I’m a little scared. I’ve been out of I.T. for a long time, I’m a computer dinosaur compared to the other people working in this department so I’m going to really have to learn quick, which fortunately Ashford taught me to do rather thoroughly during that quantitative section of my degree. It will be a monumental challenge and I will be reporting directly to a Senior Vice President which can make or break a career very quickly indeed. So I anticipate either A.) I’ll do well and be promoted fairly quickly or B.) I’ll stink it up and be in the soup line within the year. You gotta love a challenge like that.
Wish me luck.
