My Ashford University Experience

Vanessa is a 24-year-old stay-at-home mom, wife, military spouse, and veteran. She started her online education while she was still in the Navy. After receiving an honorable discharge, getting married, and having two beautiful girls in two years, she is still going strong with her education at Ashford University. She is currently doubling up on classes with hopes to attend graduation December 2009 with a Bachelor's in Business Administration.

Online Job Searches Stink

Okay so I’ve registered with 3 or 4 online job search engines, a couple of which at least appear promising.  The thing is that this online thing actually takes much, much longer than I seem to remember and I’m questioning if it is all worth the effort.  For example, I create a profile, upload a resume, make the cover letter, etc.  So when I hit the apply button do you think all of that suddenly is forwarded to the job I’m interested in?  Of course not.  Instead I get directed to a 3rd party website and am asked to create yet another profile, upload my resume, fill out an application and paste a cover letter.  All in all it can take an easy 2 hours or more to get this all done per job.  I also know that on the flip side all of this pops up as a blip in someone’s email that may or may not be looked at.

Another problem is that I don’t think that all the employers who have jobs posted on the website are actually actively seeking to fill a position.  Some may keep a job posted simply to have applications on file for when a position needs to be filled, who knows?

So is it fun looking for a job?  No.  Especially when I really don’t have a clear direction that I would like to go.  Accounting?  No experience, little to no education as of yet.  Management?  Sure, but of what?  A restaurant?  Hotel?  A retail store?  Not too appealing.  As you may have guessed law enforcement isn’t necessarily conducive towards private sector work.  This weekend I will apply for some county and city jobs and see if that works out.  Right now I’m just kind of lost.  I’ve been so focused on one thing for so long that refocusing is kind of tough.

Agreed!

Whenever I've looked for work and used the big job sites, I've usually only gotten calls from headhunters and recruiters (who always treated me dismissively or never had any worthwhile opportunities).
