Is anyone else here tired of paying between $4.00 and $5.00 per gallon of gas? Seriously, when Lou Dobbs used to stand on his soap box about a "war on the middle class" I just thought he was full of hot air but now I'm starting to wonder.
I sure feel like someone has got it out for us working class stiffs. I don't see the wealthy being especially affected in their lifestyles other than now they have something to complain about to make them feel like they're really just one of us. The people who are hit the hardest? The lower income, the poor and the average college student.
I cannot imagine repeating my first year of college over again with today's gas prices. Working part-time, going to class part-time all the way across town and driving the only car I could afford at the time, a rebuilt 1978 Chevrolet Impala with a big fat v8 which used to cost $20 to fill up and that was in 1996. I could only work between 15 and 20 hours a week and I barely scraped by and that was with tuition at about $33.00 an hour, probably the cheapest tuition I have ever seen as I was a county resident.
Now? Forget about it. I can't imagine what the part-time student is having to do to make ends meet with the cost of living and tuition nowadays. As such there has been a boom in students foregoing the drive and simply opting to take classes online which makes a lot of sense.
I spend more on gas than I do groceries these days and for the struggling student driving across town three times a week the gas prices will really start to cut in on money for other obligations. I can see tomorrow's college marketing slogan now, "go to school online, the money you save in gas will more than pay for the class." Okay, so it's not too catchy but it gets to the point right?
