According to the Financial Times, people who work in IT and have an MBA are the most sought after talent in the computer business today. I thought this story was interesting specifically because I used to work in Information Technology, right after the Dot Com bubble burst and at the time it was virtually impossible for me to find a job anywhere. I found myself overqualified for call center work which was being outsourced to India as quickly as possible and under qualified for advanced engineer work. I briefly worked for 2 different companies where I was treated as an overhead cost and a not so desirable overhead cost at that. I found it extremely difficult to become and stay competitive due to the amount of trade knowledge required to remain viable in the field along with all of the new and exciting emerging technologies coming out every day. While the boss would "ooh and aah" over his new handheld Blackberry, I would have to stay up at night reading tech manuals, white papers and books trying to integrate it into our systems.
Odd then that after all of these years that the tool that provides the edge to techies isn't additional techie knowledge or vendor certificates. Nope, it is the not so humble MBA. I have considered entering the IT market again, but honestly, at 7 years out I am something of a dinosaur. I mean, I can still remember when networks were built using coaxial cables in token ring configurations. Don't worry, if you don't understand that last sentence it doesn't matter. You won't need to know it even if you did work in IT unless you're fascinated by history. That's how outdated I've become. Still, there is the competitive part of me that wonders how well I would do in the marketplace now or in October when I finish my MBA. Hey you never know a couple of certs here and there, an MBA and my experience could turn things around. Even still, I cannot stand the idea of staying up late at night fidgeting with tech manuals and white papers.
