My Ashford University Experience

Vanessa is a 24-year-old stay-at-home mom, wife, military spouse, and veteran. She started her online education while she was still in the Navy. After receiving an honorable discharge, getting married, and having two beautiful girls in two years, she is still going strong with her education at Ashford University. She is currently doubling up on classes with hopes to attend graduation December 2009 with a Bachelor's in Business Administration.

The First Day of Managerial Finance and I Still Have No Books

Today is my first day of Managerial Finance.  So far it is the usual lighthearted stuff like introducing yourself on the bulletin board and wishing each other luck.  My expectations for this class are somewhat minimal as I am learning that none of these classes turn out exactly as I have expected.  Case in point, Organizational Behavior and Marketing were not nearly as difficult as I had anticipated, whereas Business Law and Economics turned out to be way more difficult than I had anticipated.  Managerial Accounting turned out to be largely a concept course and not super heavy in the formulas or equations and though there was plenty of it, the course didn’t hold a candle to the amount of formulas involved with Managerial Economics.  As for this course, I believe that there will be a little more computation and formulas in general as is the nature of finance, but how it will apply to the course is still a mystery to me.

The first page of the course, I guess what you would call the announcement board pretty much was a warning to make sure all of your assignments get turned in on time and the consequences of not doing so.  I’ve really only had one other professor like that so far and though it’s not the hearty “hello, good to have you in my class” that you would normally associate with Ashford University, it is fair for the professor to get his expectations on the table right away as to alleviate any potential for confusion.

I haven’t yet received my book, which is a little stressful; I emailed the vendor only to find out it shipped priority on the 18th… just lovely.  I am going to have a lot of reading to catch up on and IF it arrives this week before Thursday the best I can hope for is to skim over the material before preparing week 1 discussion posts.  How absolutely irritating!  Anyway it’s kind of my fault since I ordered the book last week but still, I would like to rant and rave and shake my little fist until I feel a little better.

Note to other students, order your books as soon as you find out what course you will be in.  DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!!  Otherwise you will find yourself in the unfortunate position that I am in whereby work is due, the instructor has no tolerance for late assignments and I still don’t have my reading materials.  It’s a lot like being in a foot race with your shoelaces tied together.

Well wish me luck.

That's exactly why I'm ordering my book BEFORE I enroll in my next class. I hate not having all the materials.

It's kind of a balancing act though.  Sometimes when you order books before getting the syllabus you end up with the wrong edition or a book you don't need (both have happened to me) so I normally check them against the syllabus however that's usually getting close to the wire.
