Of course the title of this post is a lyric from Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash, but I can’t think of a better expression for how I feel right about now. I just ordered my book for Managerial Accounting and I have to say, I’m a little scared and a lot apprehensive. I have been touting the value of knowing accounting as it is a skill that every organization in America needs, or at least those that ever buy, sell, rent or own anything. I will probably use this class as the measure by which I choose whether or not to pursue further accounting training from LSU or anywhere else.
Here’s the rub though, when searching for MBA job postings in my area, almost all but maybe 3 or 4 out of the 20 to 30 odd jobs posted any given week ask for skills or advanced experience and/or training in accounting or finance. Accounting seems to be a big fat #1 in demand skill for MBA’s in my location with finance a semi-close second. These next two classes will not only introduce me to an entire new skill set, but may also show me how successful I will be as an MBA in the workforce. Will I be the proverbial “paper tiger” who has the credentials but not the skills or will I be the “go to” guy?
I expect these next two classes will reveal to me more than any other classes I have taken to date as to what I am likely to be doing in my next job and if a career change at this stage in my life is wise or not. It’s a lot to take in and next Monday, I’ll be knee deep in it. The break is almost over.
