Saving $$$ for the Holidays (3 of 10)

GIFT WRAP

Writing Check

Stick with plain. There's no need to pay the extra bucks for fancy holiday gift bags or wrapping paper. Buying the cheaper solid colored version and then decorating with ribbons and bows is a good way to save.

Reuse gift bags, ribbons and tissue paper. Gift bags are getting more and more popular because they are quicker and easier to use than traditional wrapping paper. Hopefully you've saved gift bags from past presents received that you can reuse for your gift-giving needs. If this year's holiday gatherings are spread out you may even be able to get away with reusing gift bags right away by receiving them at one gathering and turning around and using them at the next. The same is true for ribbons, bow and tissue paper. However you reuse them, they are sure to save you money.

Look around your home. Presenting gifts to others does not need to just be limited to gift bags and wrapping paper. Getting creative with items already in your home can save you money. Using leftover wallpaper and fabric is a cute way to wrap a gift. You can also use the backside of non-holiday wrapping paper. Typically that side is just white and therefore can be decorated to fit the holiday season. Don't forget about any tin containers or unused baskets in your home. Using something you have on hand is a great money-saving tip and helps cut down on clutter.

Put your kids in charge. Passing the gift-wrapping duty on to your children can save you time, yet add a nice touch. Give them paper grocery bags or rolls of craft paper and let them decorate to their heart's content. Your children will feel a sense of pride, the gift receiver will enjoy this personal touch, and you can get away with avoiding expensive gift wrap and saving time.
