AMVETS/DeVry Scholarships

If you're an American military veteran and you've been eyeing any of the degree programs offered by DeVry University, you're in luck.

AMVETS and DeVry have announced a partnership in which they will offer up to 30 new scholarships for veterans, their spouses and their children. National Guard and Coast Guard veterans are included. The scholarship is based on financial need, the student must write an essay and, of course, must either be enrolled in DeVry University or intending to apply to one of the school's undergraduate or graduate degree programs.

DeVry's AMVETS scholarship is being awarded to 10 undergraduate or graduate students each semester from November 2007 through July 2008. Award recipients will receive $1,000 per semester, up to a total of $9,000 over the course of the entire degree program.

If you are interested in applying for the DeVry scholarship, you had better hurry. The first deadline is October 15th for the semester beginning October 29th. Other scholarship deadlines are coming up on February 11, 2008; June 16th, 2008; and October 6th, 2008.

Certain veterans and their family members are not eligible for the AMVETS scholarship, such as those receiving full tuition reimbursement from an employer, employees of AMVETS, and those who qualify for DeVry's Active Duty Military rate. Recipients of scholarship awards have 30 days to accept it, and must enroll within two semesters of accepting the scholarship.

What I really like about this scholarship is that it is good for either on-campus or online courses, so distance learning students are eligible, too! The scholarship can be used at either DeVry or Keller Graduate School of Management, both of which are regionally accredited.

Another thing I found interesting is that those who seek the scholarships are not required to be members of AMVETS, and need not join AMVETS to be considered. At least, there was nothing indicating this on the scholarship application form. If you elect to join AMVETS (and again, it does not appear this is required), membership is open to all U.S. veterans who served in the military after 1940 and received an honorable discharge.

If you are a U.S. military veteran, or a spouse or child of a veteran, and are interested in pursuing your higher education through DeVry, you can find a scholarship application here:
